Part 4: After Own Business |
During the period after leaving own business, I decided to focus on my own professional development. I completed my Master of Management through Massey University, continuing my focus on both Management and HR studies. My research project was on the experiences on education entrepreneurs in Hungary. In addition to academic qualifications, I decided to focus on the attainment of professional qualifications in HR and Management. I attained my Fellowship of the Institute of Leadership and Management (FInstLM), and passed examinations through the Human Resource Certification Institute to become a certified Human Resource Management Professional (HRMP). Since then I have also become a Society of Human Resource Management Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP). The attainment of professional qualifications was important to me to validate my experience as a professional in HR and Management, while also giving me an opportunity to identify my gaps in knowledge, particularly in HR, so that I could learn accordingly.
In 2014 I finished my consulting work when given the opportunity to join Sidra Medical & Research Center as an Educator for Corporate Programs, where I still work today. In my current role I am responsible for needs analysis, design, delivery and evaluation of educational programs within a pre-operational hospital that relate to non-clinical areas. This includes business skills and IT training, as well as coordinating outsourced language skills training. My past business experiences have enriched my business skills training, and now that I work in a large organisation within a large integrated HR department, I am able to ensure my work in Learning & Development fits within an overall organisational HR strategy. However more than anything, I believe my current role has enriched my development as an Education professional. I have had the opportunity to work under an experienced educator with over 20 years education experience in hospital and academic environments. While I have previously been trained on the background theory, a lot of my own work while working in consultancy focused on workplace application alone. My current manager has really challenged me to apply theories like Bloom's Taxonomy of Learning and Knowles' principles of Adult Learning, to make sure my learning design and delivery is founded in evidence-based education theory. Furthermore I have had the opportunity to deepen my practice of learning evaluation more than I could ever do as a consultant being engaged in short-term projects, as I have led the design of evaluation processes to assess changes in workplace behaviour months after educational programs. I plan to use this as a research topic for a Doctorate of Business Administration Program I have recently been admitted to at the University of Southern Queensland as I constantly continue my own learning journey. My development as both a HR/Management Professional and an Education Professional continues, and I am thankful for the rich experiences I have had to-date from work across the world. |
